How
does the gospel work practically in our daily lives? Nothing is more important
than understanding the true nature of the gospel. The popular gospel of our day
is a message that leaves us with the idea that God wants to renovate and
improve our lives. It is basically a motivational message with God being the Great
Motivator and the Bible a Motivational Manual that helps us to improve Adam and
make him acceptable and "successful".
The
truth is, however, that God has crucified Adam in His Son and His only plan is
for Christ to live His life in us as we "grow up into Him" (Eph. 4:15).
Only Christ can live the Christian life. This is why Paul said in effect that
the heart of the gospel was "not I, but Christ" (Gal. 2:20).
It
is only when we, often through many trials and tribulations, recognise our true
condition of complete weakness in ourselves that we begin to realise that our
only hope for spiritual growth is the very life and holiness of Jesus Himself,
the One who has indwelt us since the first day we believed in Him and received
His life.
"If I must boast, I will boast
of the things that show my weakness." 2 Corinthians 11:30
"But he said to me, "My
grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power
of Christ may rest upon me." 2 Corinthians 12:9
